“What is true is right!”

The Rest of the Story!

This is the rest of the story about how the motto “Verum Tantum” was created…

About 1969, in a North High School English class, I was studying how Latin phrases have become common mottos in the English language…

‘E pluribus unum‘ [Latin for "Out of many, one"], is a phrase on the Seal of the United States, along with ‘Annuit cœptis‘ [Latin for "He (God) has favored our undertakings." (brackets in original).] and ‘Novus ordo seclorum‘ [Latin for "New Order of the Ages"], and adopted by an Act of Congress in 1782.

‘Semper Fidelis‘ [Latin for "Always Faithful"], is well known in the United States as the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps (and often shortened to ‘Semper Fi’ in Marine contexts).

In that class we were challenged to write a motto for our life, family or a future venture…

Quod Verum Tutum

Spier’s School in 1891

I was inspired by the motto of a school, Spier’s school, in my grandfather’s native Scotland. The school motto was ‘Quod verum tutum’ [Latin for "What is true is right"].

The Motto Stone From the Spier’s School

The Latin motto of the old Spier’s School translates as ‘What is true is right (or secure).’ This motto was chosen by the Spier family, being used on the official school Seal of the Board of Governors, on the school uniform, and in the “Spier’s School Magazine”.

‘Quod Verum Tutum’, Spier’s Magazine No 1, 1888

‘Quod verum tutum’ could be translated “What is true is right”, “What is true is secure”, “What is true is safe”, or even “True things are safe.”

The school closed, 30 June 1972 (the same month I graduated from my High School). A sandstone slab or panel (photo above), carved with ‘Quod verum tutum’ was rescued from the school grounds, after having been shattered in the school’s demolition in 1984. The slab was preserved at the Old Stables Museum in Kilbirnie (Ed.Note: Now closed. Some years ago the Friends of Spiers (FoS) became guardians of the Spier’s motto panel.).

The ‘Quod verum tutum’ motto is actually anonymous in origin, however it is in use elsewhere. For example, ‘Quod verum tutum’ was used by the Courtney family, Earls of Devon.

A Coat of Arms bearing the motto appears on the sign of this hotel!

‘Quod Verum Tutum’ on a Coat of Arms!

Verum Tantum

With the motto ‘Quod Verum Tutum’ firmily in my mind, I wanted a motto that would represent the best path for me…

Only the Truth, ‘Verum Tantum‘, which also renders, in a word for word translation, as “Truth Only!”

And now you know… The Rest of the Story!

My Personal Motto is:

Verum Tantum

Verum is the Latin for Truth…
Tantum is the Latin for Only…

So the literal translation is:

Truth Only

However, this is in perfect Latin grammar…

So the meaning of “Verum Tantum” in English is:

“Only The Truth!”

That is how I have decided to live my life… Only the TRUTH!

It is father’s day, I receive 5 wonderful hand made cards from my family and I also received this email.

What Is A Papa?

A Papa is someone who
wants to catch you before you fall
but instead picks you up,
brushes you off,
and lets you try again.

A Papa is someone who
wants to keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way,
even though his heart breaks in silence
when you get hurt.

A Papa is someone who
holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break the rules,
shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail . . .

They say that, from the instant he lays eyes on her,
a Papa adores his daughter. Whoever she grows up to be,
she is always to him that little girl in pigtails. She makes
him feel like Christmas, everyday. In exchange, he makes
a secret promise not to see the awkwardness of her teenage
years, the mistakes she makes or the secrets she keeps.

They say that, children cannot see the Fatherhood of God
unless they first see God in the lives of their Papas.

My Papa never taught me how to live life;
he just allowed me to see how he lived his.

Any man can be a father, but
it takes a special man to be a Papa.

One day, I saw my Papa kneeling before his bed with an open Bible
interceding, crying, and praying for me by name.
What a defining moment!
I learned that only a real Papa would ever do that.

I saw the Fatherhood of God
in the way my Papa worked and talked.
(walk the talk.) (say what you mean, and mean what you say.)
(God knows and I know ~ and that settles the issue!)

If someday I will find my prince charming,
my Papa (xxxxxxx) will always be my king!

I was thinking about my brother Jesse this morning, he went to heaven to be with the Lord about a month ago. My friend Francel sent me this story and I just felt maybe I should pass it on to you. I love you… I pray you enough! ~Lan

I Pray You Enough!

Recently, I overheard a Father and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. The public address system had announced the departure.

Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the Father said, “I love you, and I pray you enough.”

The daughter replied, “Dad ~ our life together has all been God’s blessings and more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I pray you enough, too. And, Dad, when you go, please don’t look back. We hug, we kiss, and we go. I do not want to see you leave.”

So they hugged for a few more precious moments, and they kissed and they both quickly turned around and left.

The Father walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there, I could see that he wanted and really needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on his privacy, but he welcomed me by his asking, “Did you ever say good-bye to someone you really love knowing that it would be forever?”

“Yes, I have,” I replied. “But forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?”

“I am old, and my daughter lives so far away. Our life is in God’s hands and only He knows how much time I have left before He will call me home. I have challenges to meet and the reality is – the next trip back will be for my funeral,” he said.

“When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, “I pray you enough.” May I ask what that means?”

The Father began to smile. “That is a prayer that has been handed down from my family for many generations. My parents prayed it to me when I left them to come to the new world.” He paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail, and he smiled even more. “When we bless each other, “I pray you enough,” we are asking God that the other person’s life be filled with enough blessings to sustain them.”

Then turning toward me, he shared the following as if he were reciting it from memory:

“I bless you in the name of the Lord.

I pray you enough sunshine to keep your attitude bright and warm no matter how gray and cold the day may appear.

I pray you enough rain to quench your thirst and appreciate the sunshine even more.

I pray you enough joy to give you strength and keep your spirit alive no matter your circumstance.

I pray you enough pain not to discourage you but to make you persevere and overcome.

I pray you enough gain to satisfy your needs and have more to help those who have less.

I pray you enough loss to appreciate all that you already have.

I pray you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.”

He then began to cry and slowly sobbed and walked away . . .

They say that, it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but an entire lifetime to ever forget them.

Take time to live while you are still alive.

Psalm 90:12 “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom (a heart for eternity).”

Psalm 145:8-9a “The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all.”

Psalm 145:18-19b “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, and to all who call on Him in truth. He hears their cry and saves them.”

Psalm 16:4 “One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.”

Be blessed! Be a blessing to others.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Matthew 5:9

Pastor Chito M. Morales Sr. passed from life unto life this morning, to be with our Lord Yeshua the Messiah (Jesus the Christ). Brother Chito, as I called him, is my good friend. I say is because although he is gone from this life, I am sure he is alive with the Lord. Like a good friend who moved away to a distant land, I am sure I will meet and fellowship with him again.

Brother Chito is a true peacemaker. Those who walked with him for a time knew the gentleness and kindness of this great man. But the one my brother walked with the most is our Lord. And Chito walks ever nearer to Him today.

Pastor Chito, as most others called him, knows peace in ways many cannot fathom. He is a true peacemaker, no doubt a child of God.

I remember this humble man in the mid to late 80′s in the Midtown Mania hotel, an FGBMFI convention. He was at peace with men like Pat Robertson of the 700 Club and President Ramos of the Philippines. Now he is a peace with the King of kings and Lord of lords. He was not one to seek attention, and I was happy to meet him at my convention table. At the time, I was in Dumaguete City and he was in Davao City, worlds apart.

A few years later the Lord brought us both to live in Cebu, walking down the street, as he often would, he saw me eating in a restaurant and came in to renew our short friendship from years before. Indeed, our friendship grew. Each week in my office for a couple years, Pastor Chito would lead a prayer meeting. Not only a peacemaker and a child of God, but a man of serious prayer as well. Pastor Chito became my brother on this earth, and I felt compelled to call him as such, my Brother Chito.

As a member of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International (FGBMFI) Pastor Chito brought unity and peace with him where he went. Often his was the calm voice of the Lord that people heard when different ideas were presented. Pastor Chito has a voice that was like a cross between a beloved father and a best friend. You knew he loved you and without trying, he demanded your respect.

Brother Chito was not one to wait for others, he would warmly greet you at the door of our meetings and genuinely welcome you in. It may not be doctrinally correct, but I know Chito would have smiled his warm smile at my thought… I would not be surprised if he was standing at the “pearly gates” now welcoming people in to their new life there.

That was one thing Chito did well… He believed in new life. As a prison chaplain in Davao, Cebu and actually all of the Philippines, he ministered to the needs of the lost souls behind bars. He was a peacemaker, but he was also a life changer. He led many to a new life. Now he has changed, putting off that which cannot last and taking up that which cannot fail, Chito himself has a new life. That is Pastor Chito’s way.

He received the highest rank Chaplain’s office in the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary, for any Born Again, Evangelical Chaplain in the history of the Philippines. I remember his office at the Cebu Pier and watching him work out on the courts with the others in the Coast Guard. How hansom and dignified he filled out his uniform.

Most of all I remember my brother Chito as my friend. A few times a week he would pop into my office and we would just talk. Often for hours. When I closed the office, he came to my home. Even when I moved to the next city, he would still come to my home. The last time I saw him, he stopped at my house, headed south with a few visitors, he just stopped in for a hug. I know when I get to the other side Chito will be there waiting with a hug.

Likewise, I always felt welcome in the little home he shared with his beloved Luz. Such a quiet peace they had together in that home. Pray for Luz, I am sure she needs it now.

Chito was also a good father. I remember well how proud he was of his daughter when she not only passed the Philippine Bar, but did it with high marks! He loved all his children so much and would often make the journey to Davao to visit his mother and his children. This Saturday his body will make one last journey to Davao. But my Brother Chito won’t be going with it, he has already made a new home with the Lord.

As I type this I noticed the cross stitches on my wall. Each made by a different member of my family. Each framed personally by my Brother Chito. These three here in my room are famous dogs, one of the 101 Dalmatians, “Blues Clues” my daughter made and my favorite “Snoopy” made by my Honeybun… But each one carefully framed by Brother Chito himself. I treasure these even more now. A tear rolls down my cheek as I wonder who will frame the cross stitch my Honeybun is working on now?

These dogs remind me of one of the last times Pastor Chito visited us… We were talking about a wonderful book called Cat and Dog Theology. The different ways believers approach God. Cats are more “Me” centered, Dogs are more “Thee” centered. A quote from the book made Chito laugh…

A dog says, “You pet me, you feed me, you shelter me, you love me, you must be God.” A cat says, “You pet me, you feed me, you shelter me, you love me, I must be God.” People have vastly different views on how to serve the Lord… Ah yes, Pastor Chito, the peacemaker.

Comparing our own pets throughout the years, we concluded the book was correct, “dogs have masters whereas cats have staff.” We were not talking about animals, but people, those we know in our fellowship with believers. Too bad we do not have more Dog Theology we agreed. (Please note, to cat lovers this is not about cats. If you are not sure about Cat and Dog Theology I highly suggest you get a copy of the book and read about it on your own or with your fellowship group. It may give you, and your good friend, a good memory!)

Brother Chito lived his life to bring glory to the Lord, that is what our conversation about Cat and Dog Theology was about. I remember discussing what it means to bring glory to God. How do you define it in a non religious way… “To make God Famous”… Think about that, Chito did!

Less than a hand full of men in my lifetime have I considered my close personal friend, Chito is numbered with them. He inspired me to be better and I personally feel the loss of his passing from this world. Each time I read Matthew 5:9, I will think of Chito. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Truly Pastor Chito M. Morales Sr. was a peacemaker and truly my Brother Chito is a child of God.

God Bless You Brother Chito

What’s the “F”? It is Happy “F” Day!

“F” in the Hexadecimal Numbering system is how you say 15 in decimal. However, in the language of computers, binary, hexadecimal “F” would be represented as “1111″!

Since New Years this year looks like 1111, for example 1/1/11 or 11/1/1, you might just shorten it to “F” and say Happy “F” Day! Or What the “F”?

The only problem is that “11″, as in 2011, is actually “C” in hex. So to hex someone with 11 you would need to say “What the C?” Instead of “What the F?” And what the F would people think if you said What the C? Or even “What the Eleven?”

This all gets a bit rather confusing…

Change Topic…

Did anyone notice that 10% or one tenth or a tithe of this century is already over… We better stop wasting time!

What the F?

Happy F Day!

Pass the word… What the F Year (15 as in 2015) is only 4 years away!

Birthdays are usually a sweet time! In youth we look forward to them, not only for the presents, but also for the “status” of being a year older.

As we age, we would like that status to reverse… but too late. Sometimes, things go wrong, really wrong, and birthdays can become sad reminders of that wrong. I was born with Celiac Disease and untreated it made many things in my life go wrong. My son is 36 today, I wish I could wish him a Happy Birthday! He was born on my uncle Bob’s birthday. I wish I spent more time with him before he died. Happy Birthday you two!

All the while I was growing up I had these mood swings and behavior problems, really unexplained thought processes. Those carried forth into my adult years. As another of my sons told me, I left a pretty big wake of hurt and damaged people behind me. And I did. So why do I tell you this and air this for all the world to see… Simple… When something goes wrong you need to keep looking for an answer… Why?

Years later, at the age of 52, I found out. I was born with a genes that can cause Celiac Disease. Likely my mother had it and my grandfather (her dad) likely had it too. (In my opinion they had symptoms in that they had health issues that are often related to Celiac Disease and I had to get my Celiac from one of my parents, who had to get it from one of their parents, etc.) You see Celiac is passed from parent to child. In fact, even is you get any of the 13 identified genes, it does not mean you will get Celiac. But you can get Celiac with only one of the genes! Likewise, even if you have the genes, and even if you get Celiac Disease, it is only a few people who develop Celiac Rage or mood swings or mental problems… I just happened to be “lucky”.

So, Celiac Disease destroyed my family, it the same way drinking or drugs destroy some families. But with drinking and drugs, you go to rehab and you get better and people accept that as long as you say away from that stuff, your life has changed. Just imagine how hard it is to explain that as long as I stay away from food like bread and pizza and spaghetti that my life has changed!

All those things have one thing in common, gluten! Hey, read some packages! It will not take you very long before you find one labeled “Gluten Free” – why do they put that on there? It is not for decoration or just to waste ink, it is because gluten, stuff in wheat, barley and rye, really destroys people’s lives! For some, it destroys their health. Gluten causes one kind of diabetes. And Celiac mimics lot’s of other diseases. Just search Celiac and if you have a complaint, it may be there.

HEALTH TIP

Regardless of what your illness, if you have gone to a doctor and have not improved… start thinking about Celiac… Go find a young intern at some hospital and ask for a consultation. Ask the intern fresh out of medical school, if it is possible Celiac Disease might be causing your symptoms and does he recommend you be tested for it?

Why an Intern?

The reason is simple, when most doctors went to school they were taught that Celiac happens in only 0.001% of the time. Actually, about 1% of Americans have Celiac and 97% of the people suffering from this disease are not diagnosed. Most doctors today (except the new ones) were trained that Celiac Disease is so rare that they would likely never see a case. However, the truth is some of those same doctors who do not check for Celiac, may be treating a high percentage of Celiac patients in their clinic – with the wrong drugs for the wrong illnesses. That is why patents do not respond!

It is also why in this case it is wise to ask an intern if they think you would benefit from being tested for Celiac!

Before it destroys your health, or your life. Some people have noticed that afternoon road rage is higher than morning road rage. If you know anyone who ever got angry inappropriately, talking them into being tested for Celiac may save their lives or there families. A lot of road rage, perhaps the majority, can be linked to Celiac Rage! Why the afternoon? Americans eat sandwiches and burgers for lunch! The bread is loaded with gluten!

But most people with Celiac Disease health problems, do not have Celiac Rage! On the other hand, it is possible that the very reason my son has no communication with me is because he may have Celiac he got in his DNA package from me! Scary right? In fact, my whole blood related family says they do not have Celiac Disease, but not one has been tested! They all have been told by their OLD doctors that Celiac is Rare. The medical fact is that because I have Celiac, they are at a much greater risk of having it than the normal population!

Just “Lucky”

Remember that I said I was just lucky to have the worst kind of Celiac that effects your thoughts like PCP and ruins your life like drugs and alcohol… Well today I do feel lucky, but for a different reason. Today I live a VeGenesis Lifestyle, totally gluten free. No more thought problems, no more Celiac Rage. I really wish I could make contact with my destroyed family. I would love for them to see how I am now without gluten, but all they remember is the Gluten Dragon and I do not blame them for that.

I am lucky because I have learned that almost everyone on the planet has an allergic reaction to wheat, even if it is so small it causes not apparent problem. I am lucky because I am starting a new website called New LipHe (say “New Life”) at NewLipHe.com where people can learn to have a New Life, improved from what they have! In a way it is like a birthday gift to my son to help other families not be broken like our. I am lucky, because I was able to change my diet and change my life so no one else will be hurt by the Celiac Rage I was born with…

But on days like my son’s birthday, I just wish him a very Happy 36th Birthday… and hope he reads my blog!

Here are a few things I have learned in life. Or perhaps It would be better to say things that I am learning... I've learned that it's a lot easier to react than it is to think... [...]

These are personal reflections on some things I have learned in life. Or perhaps It would be better to say things that I am learning…

Some are truths I have collected from others, some are personal thoughts I have had myself. Nonetheless, I print them here in the hopes they will also help you.

I’ve learned that it’s a lot easier to react than it is to think.

I’ve learned that I can do something in an instant that will give me a heartache for life.

I’ve learned that it’s taking me a long time to become the person I want to be. (I am trying to be the person my dog thinks I am!)

I’ve learned that I should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time I see them.

I’ve learned that I can keep going long after I think I can’t. (Like when my wife or baby is sick and I had “no more strength” but I did what was needed to save them anyway.)

I’ve learned that either I control my attitude or it controls me.

I’ve learned that in science, all codes are by intelligent design, and that the DNA I have is not “genetically flawed”, as some would say, I simply have not fully understood the designer and his principles.

I’ve learned that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades and there had better be something else to take its place. (Better to start a relationship with commitment and TRUTH and let it build to hot and steamy over the long run.)

I’ve learned that I am responsible for what I do, no matter how I feel.

I’ve learned that learning to forgive takes practice. It is a skill and a discipline that I must develop and train myself to do.

I’ve learned that there are people who love me dearly, but just don’t know how to show it. (Even though love is not a feeling, it is an action or a verb.)

I’ve learned that the people I love (my spouse, my children, my best friend) and I can do anything, or nothing, and have the best time.

I’ve learned that sometimes when I’m angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn’t give me the right to be cruel.

I’ve learned that true friendship continues to grow even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love.

I’ve learned that just because someone doesn’t love me the way I want them to, doesn’t mean they don’t love me with all they have.

I’ve learned that no matter how much I care, some people just don’t care back. (Most of my life I have felt alone and lonely without love.)

I’ve learned that one of the greatest patterns and examples of love I can find is my dog! She love me regardless.

I’ve learned that my family won’t always be there for me. It may seem funny, but people who aren’t related to me, can take care of me and love me and teach me to trust people again. Families aren’t biological. True families are the ones we commit to love, care for, or be with. After all, any person we marry starts out as a stranger to us, right?

I’ve learned that sometimes the most loving “son” or “brother” is one born of a different family.

I’ve learned that no matter how good a someone is, they’re going to hurt me every once in a while, and I must forgive them for that.

I’ve learned that no matter how bad my heart is broken the world doesn’t stop for my grief.

I’ve learned that just because people don’t argue, it doesn’t mean they love each other. And just because they argue, it doesn’t mean they don’t love each other.

I’ve learned that my background and circumstances may have influenced who I am, but I am responsible for who I become.

I’ve learned that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences I’ve had, and what I’ve learned from them, and less to do with how many birthdays I’ve celebrated.

I’ve learned that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it.

I’ve learned that it’s not what I have in my life, but who I have in my life that counts.

I’ve learned that two people can look at the exact same thing, and see something totally different. Even four people can see four different things. When I love someone, I must try to see things their way.

I’ve learned that no matter the consequences, those who are honest with themselves, get farther in life.

I’ve learned there is a design for my life, and by accepting that design, my life gets better.

I’ve learned that no matter how many friends I have, if I am their pillar, I will feel lonely and lost at the times I need them most.

I’ve learned that writing, as well as talking, can ease emotional pains.

I’ve learned that there are many ways of falling and staying in love.

I’ve learned that I cannot make someone love me. All I can do is be someone who can be loved. The rest is up to them.

I’ve learned that I shouldn’t be to eager to find out a secret. It could change my life forever. Yet, if I truly love someone, I will have no secrets with them!

I’ve learned that I don’t have to change friends, if I understand that friends change.

I’ve learned that even when I think I have no more to give, when a true friend cries out to me, I will find the strength or means to help them.

I’ve learned that the people I care most about in life, are taken from me too soon.

I’ve learned to appreciate good people like YOU!
